Is there life after death?
Have you ever thought of where you will spend eternity? Most people believe there is life after death. They also believe there is a place called heaven for those who are right with God and hell for those who are not.
Despite knowing there is life after death, hell and heaven, many people do nothing about it. Some believe the opinions of others without questioning or verification. While they are very careful when planning to buy or rent cars, or houses, among other things, they spend very little time planning or even thinking about life after death. For example, no one would ever make a long journey without verifying the final destination. Many people will do significant amount of research before traveling to another country, province or state. They will not depend on a word from anyone without verification. Why not treat life after death the same way? After all, eternity is much longer than this life.
Some people think about life after death and eternity, but decide to put its consideration off for another time. Unfortunately, they end up never coming back to it. This is despite attending funerals of friends and even relatives who had very strong beliefs in God, and who knew for certain they were going to heaven.
What happens after death? When a person dies the body is separated from the soul. The body goes to the grave and the soul goes to either heaven or hell.
What do we expect in heaven?
Heaven is the dwelling place of God. The Bible tells us there will be no tears, crying, death, sorrow or pain there. We also know that there will be no sin in heaven.
What do we expect in hell?
The Bible also tells us about hell. Those who do not believe in God, those who ignore or reject His provision for sinners will go to hell. Those who do not believe there is life after death will be surprised to find themselves in hell. The Bible teaches that hell is a place of torment and suffering. Once in hell, a soul will certainly have regrets, but nothing can be done after death as the opportunity for God’s salvation has already passed.
By now you should realize that knowing there is life after death is not enough. You have to make a conscious personal decision that you want God’s provision for sinners. Where would you like your soul to go? This decision must be made in this life. It cannot be made after death. No prayers after death can change the final destination of the soul. Not even the wishes from your friends that your soul will rest in eternal peace will change your final destiny. You must make your own choice while you are still alive.
What you need to know before you decide about your life after death
Everyone is a sinner. The Bible tells us, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). There is no one who is righteous before God. No matter how hard you try, you cannot meet God’s standard. The result of our sin is separation from God. This being the case, God devised a special plan to bring mankind back to Himself. He sent His own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, from heaven to be the Saviour of the world. He was perfect and pure. The Bible teaches that there was no sin in Him. And yet, on the cross, He was punished for sin. He was taking our place. He died the death of shame on the cross for our sins. Now, anyone who believes in Him can approach God as though they never sinned. Anyone who truly believes in the Lord Jesus as Saviour has eternal life. It is so simple that many people miss it. Pardon for your sins is free because the Lord Jesus paid for it in full. The Bible tells us “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but has everlasting life”. (John 3:16).
You can be forgiven, regardless of what you have done, if you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
God’s Salvation involves believing that you have sinned against God and that the Lord Jesus bore your sins in His own body when He died on the cross.
Below is a hymn that summarizes what The Lord Jesus has done for us( Originally written by John M. Whyte in the 1850s).
1.Come, sinner, behold what Jesus hath done,
Behold how he suffered for thee;
They crucified him, God’s innocent Son,
Forsaken, He died on the tree!
They crucified him, they crucified him,
They nailed him to the tree,
And so there he died,
A King crucified
To save a poor sinner like me.
2.From heaven he came, he loved you—he died;
Such love as his never was known;
Behold; on the cross your King crucified,
To make you an heir to his throne
3.There is nothing to do, for all has been done,
Simply on Christ to believe;
And God has declared, all who trust in the Son,
The Life everlasting receive
